FAQ

Straight Answers to Your Roofing Questions

Whether you're comparing materials, wondering about permits, or trying to figure out if your roof needs repairs or a full replacement, this page covers the questions Reid's hears most from homeowners across Clarington and Durham Region.

  • How long does an asphalt shingle roof last in Ontario?

Between 20 and 30 years, depending on installation quality, ventilation, and maintenance. Ontario's freeze-thaw cycles can accelerate wear, if your roof is approaching 20 years old, a professional inspection is worth scheduling. See our New Roof Installation page.

  • How do I know if I need a repair or a full roof replacement?

Localized damage, a few missing shingles, a single leak or minor flashing issues usually calls for a repair. Replacement makes more sense when damage is widespread, the roof is over 20–25 years old, or repairs keep coming back. Reid's will give you an honest assessment either way. See our Roofing Repairs page.

  • Do I need a building permit to replace my roof in Ontario?

In most cases, a standard shingle replacement doesn't require a permit. However, requirements vary by municipality and project scope. Homeowners are ultimately responsible for obtaining the correct permits. Your contractor can help point you in the right direction. When in doubt, contact your local municipal office.

  • How does Ontario's climate affect my choice of roofing material?

Ontario winters are hard on roofs. Metal handles heavy snow, wind, and freeze-thaw cycles exceptionally well and can last 40–70 years. Asphalt and fibreglass shingles are more affordable upfront and still perform reliably when properly installed. Reid's offers both and will help you choose based on your home and budget.

  • What is a workmanship warranty, and how is it different from a manufacturer's warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty covers defects in the materials. A workmanship warranty, like Reid's 15-year warranty, covers the quality of the installation. If something fails because of how the roof was installed, that's on the contractor, not the manufacturer. Both should be offered in writing.

  • Do I need to be home during a roofing project?

No. However, staying reachable by phone is helpful in case questions come up on-site. Reid's keeps homeowners informed throughout, so you're never left guessing about what's happening on your roof.

  • What causes ice dams, and can they be prevented?

Ice dams form when heat escaping from your attic melts roof snow, which then refreezes at the edges and backs up under your shingles. Proper attic ventilation and insulation are the best prevention. Recurring ice dams are often a sign of a soffit or ventilation issue.

  • How often should I have my roof inspected?

Once a year is the standard recommendation, ideally in spring to catch winter damage, and again in fall before the cold sets in. After major storms, a quick inspection can save you from a much bigger repair bill down the road.

  • What should I look for when hiring a roofing contractor in Ontario?

At minimum: liability insurance and WSIB coverage. Without WSIB, you could be held financially responsible if someone is injured on your property. Beyond that, look for manufacturer certifications (GAF, BP), a written warranty, and a contractor who personally oversees the work, not just manages it from a distance.
